Finlay Donovan is truly riding the struggle bus. She is a mom-of-two going through a divorce at the hands of her husband’s affair, and her writing career is not taking off. She needs all the help she can get just to get by. When she is mistaken for a hitman (*ahem*, hitwoman) and is tempted with a hefty check, she finds herself intertwined in a deadly crime.

This book hooked me right away with the quirky protagonist, ridiculous plot, and witty banter. It had me always wondering: How is Finlay going to keep herself out of trouble this time?
I will admit, however, that it’s not perfect. Some of the characters annoyed me, which made me unlikely to root for them. Vero – Finlay’s babysitter and sidekick – is one of these personalities. Sometimes even Finlay got on my nerves. I’m not a mother, but I’m pretty sure Finlay’s not helping her case to keep custody of her children with some of her impulsive decisions.
However, the truth behind the murder is shocking and will surprise you. Same thing goes for the romantic interest she chooses in the end.
And oh my gosh… the ending. (If you are a last-line reader, don’t give in!)
Don’t let my earlier critiques deter you from reading this one, though. It is truly an enjoyable, relaxing murder mystery, and I believe this is purely the intent. It’s not supposed to be the most emotionally-riveting novel ever written, but rather serves as a great way to unwind and read a guilty-pleasure murder mystery.
So, grab a glass of wine and a copy of this book. Finlay may be your new best friend!
