Welcome to… *drumroll* … Cathy’s Corner!
In lieu of my typical review, I present to you a well-crafted review from my friend, Cathy; our friendship goes all the way back to middle school! I could rave for days about this wonderful lady, but I’m going to let you read her review and learn about her from the wonderful lady, herself.
Take it away, Cathy!
In Summary of Know My Name: A Memoir
Chanel Miller was attending a fraternity party at Stanford with her sister when she was raped by Brock Turner. In Know My Name she writes about her experiences before, during, and after this event. Writing in a raw voice, Chanel is ready to share her story.
Chanel is open about getting a rape kit, her experiences with Stanford afterwards, how she dealt (or did not deal) with the trauma, how her family and loved ones were affected, and her thoughts about the trial. She does not hold back on how this experience affected every aspect of her life.
Cathy’s Rating of Know My Name
Know My Name by Chanel Miller should be required reading for any college freshman as well as anyone associated with college-aged people. There is a lot of secrecy around what actually goes on at fraternity parties and how a college campus handles sexual assault cases; this one account will hopefully resonate with others who have been in similar situations. It saddens me that we live in a society where people are afraid to tell their stories. Chanel paints a concerning, yet accurate picture of the stigma, harassment, and fear that accompanies being a woman and a survivor. Her words were hard to read at times, but I also felt an urgency and closeness to her as I read them. She clearly has a gift with the written word and conveying a meaningful message. I am not alone in my response to her experiences. Her victim impact statement went viral once it was released.
Chanel’s willingness to no longer stay Emily Doe is powerful. I hope her message continues to reach people, but I also want her to live her life. May she be able to pursue all her dreams and passions, because she truly has so much to offer this world.
