“Books, Briefly” is featuring a spooky book today…
Title: How to Sell a Haunted House
Author: Grady Hendrix
READ IF YOU LIKE: scary stories about hauntings, Halloween-vibes, unrealistic characters mixed with realistic ones, reading about sibling relationships
MOOD: creepy, morbidly goofy
| Likes | Dislikes |
| How the author inserted comedic relief to offset things that were creepy or uncomfortable (like the death of family members) | The conflict took too long to resolve; the resolution wrapped up too quickly in comparison (I want to know more about how the situation affected her relationship with her brother in the future!) |
| The audiobook for the overall storytelling | The high-pitched, squeaky voice for the doll on the audiobook irked me after awhile |
| The violent altercations between the doll and the main characters, as well as the back story, became almost too weird and unrealistic in a cringey way |
FINAL THOUGHTS:
If you are a fan of hauntings and creepy dolls, How to Sell a Haunted House is for you. Grady Hendrix is a strong storyteller that hooks his readers into spooky situations. Although I was not a fan of the weird directions the novel’s plot went (as well as the one-too-many twists), I can see the right reader enjoying this for the creative story this is.
